By David Germain, CEO, Anderton Centre

“You can’t solve a climb by giving up halfway—just like you can’t finish a maths equation if you don’t see it through.”
That quote came from a Year 10 pupil who visited us last summer as part of an alternative provision group. Like many young people we support, they felt detached from education—unmotivated and misunderstood.
At the Anderton Centre, we believe the outdoors offers something schools can’t always provide: a reset button.
Why Outdoor Learning Works
Outdoor learning isn’t just about burning energy or taking a break from the classroom. Research shows it supports:
- Improved academic outcomes
- Boosted self-esteem
- Better mental health
- Stronger attendance and behaviour
According to Waite et al. (2016), learning outside the classroom builds “holistic development” and helps young people reconnect to their own potential. This is especially true for those in Special Educational Needs (SEN) or alternative provision settings.
Climbing as a Learning Analogy
There’s a surprising amount of synergy between climbing a wall and solving a maths equation:
- Problem-solving – finding the next move
- Resilience – getting back up after a slip
- Peer encouragement – building positive relationships
- Courage – facing fears and pushing boundaries
“I can’t sit still in class, but I focused for an hour on the high ropes. I felt in control for the first time in ages.”
— Participant, SEN Provision, 2023
Real Impact: Case Studies in SEN & Alternative Provision
We recently worked with a local Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) on a 3-week intervention programme. The results?
- Attendance back at school improved by 23%
- Fewer behavioural incidents reported
- Students showed more empathy and peer support
In a separate project with an SEN secondary school, a non-verbal pupil completed our ropes course—twice. Staff told us it was the most engaged they’d ever seen him.

Learning That Sticks
When students conquer the climbing wall or paddle their first canoe, they’re not just ticking a box—they’re rewriting how they see themselves. We’ve watched confidence bloom, friendships form, and walls (literal and metaphorical) come down.
If you’re a teacher, SENCO, youth worker or headteacher looking to rekindle a love for learning in your students, we’re here to help.
