Royal Yachting Association
The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Dinghy Sailing Courses offer a structured and comprehensive pathway for individuals eager to master the art of dinghy sailing. These courses cater to both beginners and experienced sailors, providing a progressive learning experience to enhance sailing skills and knowledge.
RYA Level 1: RYA Level 1 is the starting point for beginners with little to no sailing experience. This course introduces participants to the fundamental concepts of dinghy sailing. Students will learn the basics of boat handling, sail control, and essential safety procedures. By the end of the course, participants will be able to sail confidently in light winds under the supervision of an instructor.
RYA Level 2: Building upon the skills learned in Level 1, RYA Level 2 focuses on further developing sailing techniques and knowledge. Participants will refine their boat handling abilities, learn to sail independently, and gain a deeper understanding of sailing theory. By the end of this course, sailors should be competent in making decisions and handling small dinghies in moderate conditions.
Seamanship Skills: The Seamanship Skills course is designed to enhance participants' confidence and competence in sailing independently in a wider range of conditions. Sailors will learn more advanced boat handling techniques, such as recovering a man overboard, anchoring, and sailing backwards. This course aims to foster self-reliance and prepare sailors for more challenging sailing situations.
Sailing with Spinnakers: Sailing with Spinnakers is an optional course that introduces sailors to using spinnaker sails. Participants will learn how to rig, hoist, and control spinnakers, which are specialized sails used to harness downwind winds effectively. This course provides a new dimension to sailing, allowing participants to explore different sail configurations and sail downwind more efficiently.

- RYA Powerboat Level 2: The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is designed to teach individuals the basics of powerboat handling. The Anderton Centre offers a diverse range of British Canoeing Courses, catering to individuals of all skill levels who wish to explore the world of paddlesports. These courses cover various disciplines, including kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and provide participants with structured learning experiences and recognised qualifications.
Start Award: The Start Award is designed for beginners with little or no previous paddling experience. This course introduces participants to the basics of paddlesports, focusing on fundamental techniques and safety skills. Whether in a kayak, canoe, or on a stand-up paddleboard, participants will gain confidence and proficiency on the water, laying a solid foundation for further exploration.
Discover Award: Building upon the skills learned in the Start Award, the Discover Award delves deeper into paddlesports techniques and knowledge. Participants will develop their paddling skills, learn to navigate more effectively, and explore different types of water environments. This course is suitable for those who want to enhance their paddling abilities and expand their horizons in the world of canoeing, kayaking, or SUP.
Explore Award: The Explore Award is a more advanced course designed for paddlers who seek to refine their skills and undertake longer journeys with confidence. Participants will focus on journey planning, decision-making, and advanced paddle strokes, preparing them for more challenging paddling adventures. This course is ideal for those looking to explore new waterways and undertake multi-day trips.
Paddle Sport Instructor Award: The Paddle Sport Instructor Award is for individuals aspiring to become competent paddlesport instructors. This comprehensive course covers instructional techniques, safety management, and teaching skills for leading paddling sessions. Participants will learn how to effectively coach beginners and intermediate paddlers in kayaking, canoeing, and SUP, fostering a positive and supportive learning environment.
Paddle Sport Leader Award: The Paddle Sport Leader Award is designed for experienced paddlers who wish to become qualified leaders for groups on the water. This course emphasizes leadership skills, risk assessment, and group management, enabling participants to confidently lead paddling expeditions in various environments. Stand Up Paddleboarding
The "Learn to Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP)" course at the Anderton Centre offers a fantastic opportunity for beginners to discover the joy of stand-up paddleboarding. This course is designed to provide participants with a fun and supportive learning experience in a beautiful and safe environment.
Led by experienced instructors, the course starts with the basics of SUP, including board selection, paddling techniques, and safety guidelines. Participants will be introduced to the proper stance and balance on the board, allowing them to gain confidence and stability on the water.

Mountain Leader Training
Mountain Leader Training Courses are a series of comprehensive and specialized training programs designed to develop competent and skilled leaders for various outdoor environments. Each course focuses on different terrains and levels of complexity, catering to individuals interested in leading groups in specific outdoor settings.
Lowland Leader: The Lowland Leader Training Course is designed for aspiring leaders who wish to guide groups in non-mountainous, lowland areas. Participants will learn essential navigation skills, group management techniques, and risk assessment strategies suitable for leading groups through fields, forests, and gentle terrains. This course is ideal for those involved in educational or recreational activities in lowland regions.
Hill & Moorland Leader: The Hill & Moorland Leader Training Course is geared towards individuals who aspire to lead groups in hilly and moorland environments. Participants will develop their navigation skills, learn about weather interpretation, and gain knowledge of the upland environment. This course is suitable for leaders planning to work with groups in areas such as rolling hills, open moorland, and heathland regions.
Mountain Leader: The Mountain Leader Training Course is an advanced level program for those seeking to lead groups in challenging mountainous terrain. This course covers a wide range of skills, including advanced navigation techniques, emergency procedures, steep ground management, and the ability to operate in remote and harsh mountain environments. It is designed for individuals leading groups in the UK and Ireland's most rugged and challenging landscapes.
The Rescue Emergency Care (REC) First Aid Course is a comprehensive and practical training program designed to equip individuals with the essential skills and knowledge to effectively respond to emergency situations. This course is tailored to meet the needs of outdoor enthusiasts, adventure professionals, and those working in remote or challenging environments where traditional first aid resources may be limited.
During the REC First Aid Course, participants will learn a wide range of critical first aid techniques, including assessing and managing injuries, and providing immediate care for wounds, burns, fractures, and other medical emergencies. The curriculum covers CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training, which are crucial skills for saving lives in case of cardiac arrest.
One of the key focuses of this course is improvisation and resourcefulness, teaching participants how to use available materials and tools to create improvised medical aids in situations where conventional medical supplies are not readily available. This makes the REC First Aid Course particularly valuable for individuals venturing into remote or wilderness areas.

Leadership of skiing and snowboarding groups on the mountains in alpine resorts is a challenging but highly rewarding activity.
The Snowsports Course Organiser (SCO) training is designed to give leaders confidence to organise a safe, successful and enjoyable snowsports trip. It is a one day course, covering all aspects of the safe organisation and management of a school snowsports trip.
The course is certified by attendance and it is now a requirement for the lead teacher on the holiday by most local authorities before they will grant permission for the trip to take place.
