Anderton Centre Instructor Team Embark on Ultimate Mountain Rescue Challenge with Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team

The Anderton Centre’s Instructor Team recently took part in a two-day team development session at Smelt Mill Cottage, nestled in the heart of the Bowland Fells at Dunsop Bridge. This unique training opportunity saw the team pilot the Ultimate Mountain Rescue Challenge, in partnership with the Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team (BPMRT).

The Anderton Centre has a longstanding affinity with local mountain rescue teams, with many of its permanent and freelance staff actively volunteering with such organizations. This connection made the collaboration with BPMRT a natural choice for the Centre’s team development focus.

The programme delved into a comprehensive set of skills designed to strengthen the instructors’ teamwork and decision-making capabilities. Key areas included:

  • Understanding personalities and learning styles to foster collaboration
  • Developing effective communication skills, including how to “close the loop”
  • Enhancing listening abilities and leadership styles
  • Navigating decision-making under high-stress conditions
  • Managing complex incidents with precision and care

Day one saw the team participate in dynamic workshops and hands-on scenarios, honing their interpersonal and leadership abilities. Day two, however, brought a true test of their learning as they tackled a simulated mountain rescue operation. Acting as a real-life rescue team, the instructors were tasked with managing an incident on the Fells, involving the recovery of a casualty.

The simulation tested their ability to apply the skills they’d developed, including communication, coordination, and problem-solving in a high-pressure environment. It mirrored the complex, unpredictable nature of real mountain rescue situations, requiring the team to think critically and act decisively.

“The partnership with Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team has been invaluable,” said David Germain, CEO of the Anderton Centre. “Not only have our instructors learned new skills and reinforced existing ones, but they’ve also gained a deeper appreciation for the challenges and teamwork required in mountain rescue scenarios. It’s been a fantastic opportunity to grow as a team and to strengthen our connection with local rescue services.”

This innovative pilot programme demonstrates the Anderton Centre’s commitment to continuous development and excellence in outdoor instruction. The experience has left the team better equipped to manage challenges and provide exceptional leadership both on and off the water.

The Anderton Centre extends its thanks to Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team for their expertise, hospitality, and dedication to making the Ultimate Mountain Rescue Challenge a success.
